New Rules
Context:
Writing code is important, so is reading books, talking to people and keeping an eye on the ecosystem. I am having trouble managing my time and deciding when to act and when to observe, orient or decide. This rule will clearly mark a part of the day dedicated for Action, rest of the day can be freely used for other parts of the OODA loop.
Rules:
Wake up by 7 AM in the morning
Start working by 7:30 and work till 12.
Whatever you do in this period should be tangible and (hopefully) valuable.
What counts as tangible?
New functionality on the website is tangible. A blog post, communication material or producing communication material is also tangible. Reading a book and gaining insight can be valuable, but it's not tangible. “Thinking” is not tangible. Most meetings don’t lead to anything tangible. Refactoring code to be “better” organized is not tangible.
Conditions1:
I’ll follow this rule for at least 3 months, starting from 22nd April.
Serious health issues are an exception. Family emergencies are an exception. Business emergencies are not an exception, the business should be resilient to me not being available for the first few morning hours of the day.
I plan to follow the pomodoro technique, though this can change as long as there isn’t a total break of more than an hour in this period.
I flatout refuse to follow unconditional rules
